Dr Malte Wagenfeld, RMIT & Prof Wolfgang Laubesheimer, KISD, Cologne Germany
This is a ‘Global Intensive’ exchange studio between RMIT and KISD, Cologne Germany. This studio has received a $20,000 Endeavour grant to help RMIT students cover travel costs. The studio will include two intensive mode sessions, in April KISD students will visit RMIT and in mid-June we will all meet in Venice Italy for the Architecture Biennale and then travel to KISD in Cologne Germany for a one-week intensive to complete the project.
Radical – a term that has recently gained an unfortunate notoriety – embraces the idea of departing from traditional forms or ways of operating, especially in the context of innovation and progression: technologically, aesthetically, socially and culturally. ‘Schilcht’ (German) defines a refined, sophisticated and ingenious simplicity. With a focus on furniture, environments and material objects, this studio will explore the merging of these two constructs. You will begin by exploring radical thinkers and designers throughout history. Using video conferencing, joint lectures and discussions you will rigorously explore the topic whilst iterative material explorations will build a shared knowledge resource. You will work in teams of KISD and RMIT members. These teams will explore how they can engage in a deeply radical, innovative and reflective design exploration whilst being geographically distributed. The final outcome will be a highly refined prototype finished in the KISD workshops in late June, supported by an archive of experiments and a studio document. The project will be exhibited at the international furniture fair ‘IMM Cologne’ in January 2017.
