Maria completed her studies in the field of Industrial Design in 2006; her thesis centred on the study of the acculturation and transculturation of the body ornament in the ethnic evolution of persons in the western context. Her resulting collection won Maria first prize in an international jewellery design competition; the prize being a full scholarship to complete her Masters at Domus Academy in Milan – Italy, where Maria worked on design briefs with Swarovski, Daniella Puppa, Brunella Caccaviello, Fabio Cammarata, SanFab & Emi Kurebayashi.
In 2008, Maria returned to Australia and began working in a boutique industrial design consultancy before moving into the field of accessories as a product developer & designer for Australia’s largest mass market fashion retailers. Since then, Maria has established her own label, working from her design studio in West Melbourne’s River Studios.
While Maria has and continues to engage with several fields within both art and design disciplines, including installation and sculptural design, furniture, publication, system and process design, her love of cultural and ethnic intimacies and traditions and their transition into objects within the tangible manifest, is what has solidified and perpetually fuelled Maria’s passion for working within the field of body ornament design.
