This studio will give you an opportunity to work in a complex and crucial regional system that can help to shape cutting edge food innovation for Australia. You will liaise with food innovation experts, communities, councils, educational institutions and businesses so your design ideas can be developed within the constraints and challenges of a real-world context.
The Shepparton Preserving Company (SPC) has been based in Shepparton (180kms north of Melbourne) since 1912. Since its acquisition by Coca Cola Amital, in 2005, this year will its last year with functioning processing space in Shepparton.
SPC was the biggest employer in Shepparton, a town of approx 50000 people. Employment options beyond SPC are limited. In the wake of its closing is an abundance of opportunity and a lot of near abandoned warehouse and factory space.
Run in conjunction with Architecture and Landscape Architecture this studio will require students to work across disciplines to develop a Food, Art and Design (FAD) Innovation District in the historical SPC site. Within the social, economic and environmental context of the Goulburn Valley and the City of Greater Shepparton students will have to map the site, investigate local industry and community to identify potential users and opportunities, re-design the space and develop a visualised concept. Ideas can be commercial or not-for-profit.
