Studio Tutors: Dr Liam Fennessy & Melisa Duque

Partners: Digital Ethnography Research Centre (RMIT) & Bendigo Hospital

Studio Timetable: Wednesday 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm & Thursday 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm

This studio tackles an aspect of a larger ethnographic study being undertaken by DERC on the transition of numerous regional health care service functions into a single site mega-hospital scenario. Focused on the ways in which mental health clinicians might provide specialist therapies in changed settings requires design research to discover new ways of working. Industrial design practice in such a context provides other fields of research with opportunities to explore the intersections of human experiences (patients, health-care workers and carers) with the material-technological-environmental things that mediate care.

The studio will introduce you to ethnographic methods critical for design and will require the design and prototyping of a series of mobile sensory therapy systems appropriate for use in a secure mental health facility. These systems may become the subject of further research by the DERC.
