In 2012 Robert completed a Masters of Design by Research at Monash investigating the possibilities of closed loop production at a desktop scale by creating a system and machinery that converted waste plastic into 3D printer filament which was then used to create new products.

He is interested in how open-source approaches to design practice, digital fabrication techniques and the use of the internet are transforming the practice of design and how these changes can be leveraged to create new low-carbon (or no-carbon), localised and co-operative industries that are similar in output but different in scale to mass-production techniques of design and production.

He is currently reflecting on how easy it is to buy big machines cheaply on-line but then how hard it is to get them working.
