No longer something we can assume is recycled, post-consumer plastics waste is an unavoidable concern for environmentally concerned designers.

With the collapse of recycling and our realisation that perfectly good material used once is effectively wasted designers have been put on notice. There is however, a new opportunity for design to deliver positive solutions to this waste problem.

Working with progressive industry partners, Patagonia and the Metropolitan Waste Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG (Vic Govt)), under the auspices of the RMIT Design With/Without/Out Waste Outreach Platform (DWOP) this studio explores a system which historically has supported single use plastic, and proposes design interventions to reduce and reuse. Students will gain first-hand experience knowledge and insights through working directly with Patagonia and MWRRG by proposing pro-environmental circular economy, product service system based solutions. Projects will be pitched to Patagonia and MWRRG at the end of the semester.
