This course explores historical and contemporary survivalists that actively prepare for speculative calamity and proposes creative solutions for this community.

What is more terrible than the unknown? During different moments in history people have lived with a fear of being under attack from dangers outside of their control. Despite the seemingly ‘safe’ state of our lives today, we are filled with dread from that which we cannot see, know or understand.

Design at its routes embraces the unknown and actively tries to solve problems. However, design for sustainability has failed to provide any solutions to the mitigation of climate change. Understanding the motivations and role survivalist communities play in proposing solutions will provide insight and pathways forward.

Bunkering Down explores historical and contemporary survivalists that actively prepare for speculative (or not so) calamity, through readings, film critiques and group discussions. This class will embrace the survivalist counterculture and propose creative solutions for this community.
